International Journal of Fundamental and Applied Sciences (IJFAS): Announcements https://journals.mlacwresearch.org/index.php/ijfas en-US Medicinal herbs and their therapeutic effects https://journals.mlacwresearch.org/index.php/ijfas/announcement/view/5

Dear Colleagues,

Throughout history, humans have harnessed the therapeutic potential of medicinal herbs and other natural substances for the treatment and prevention of diverse diseases. In the 20th century, numerous pharmaceuticals, sanctioned by regulatory authorities worldwide, were derived from these natural reservoirs. As a result, medicinal herbs and natural products have emerged as valuable reservoirs and catalysts for drug development.

Contemporary understanding recognizes that the etiology of many diseases is characterized by multifaceted processes. Therefore, the effective management of these ailments necessitates interventions that target multiple pathways. Conventional drugs, consisting of single molecular entities, typically focus on singular pathways or specific physiological functions. In contrast, traditional folk medicine employs one or more natural products to create extracts, infusions, and decoctions. Even a single medicinal herb preparation may contain an array of bioactive molecules, numbering potentially in the hundreds or thousands. These molecules exert their effects on various organs and systems, either enhancing or inhibiting the actions of other bioactive constituents within the preparation. For instance, it is not uncommon for antibacterial and antiviral medications to exhibit immunomodulatory properties. Similarly, anti-cancer therapies may activate or suppress diverse pathways implicated in cancer initiation and progression.

In the context of this Special Issue, our objective is to consolidate and assess the most recent research advancements, elucidating the natural products capable of concurrently targeting multiple pathways and physiological functions. Such insights hold promise for the efficacious treatment of multifactorial diseases.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sushil Kumar Middha, Associate Prof, mLAC Scholar

Dr. Ligi Milesh , UW- Madison, Scholar

Dr. Usha T.
